The patient, lying in right lateral decubitus, places his hands on the chest, flexes the right calf on the thigh; which is flexed at c. 90% on the hip, the left lower limb is placed at an angle of 35º – 45º from the spinal axis. The therapist places the sole of the left foot under the patient’s knee and the sole of the right foot on the dorsal side of the latter’s right foot (pressing the calcaneus). Then the therapist grabs the joint of the patient’s left ankle with both hands, bends backwards and firmly fixes his soles in the previously mentioned support points, thus obtaining a complete extension of the patient’s left leg. A few axial rotations, left-right, follow, then the leg is pulled shortly and firmly two times, using strength within the limits of the patient’s tolerance to pain.
This description presents the manner in which the procedure is performed on the left side of the patient. Similarly, the same steps are followed on the right side. In the standard version, the procedure is first performed on the left side and then on the right side.
